May Post

hey, so for my last post I decided to write about GE selling its plastics sector. I got this article from : http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070521/ap_on_bi_ge/ge_saudis_plastic;_ylt=Av_1A6mcvJVMczrB1B3aSapu24cA

The article I choose is called Saudi firm buys GE Plastics for $11.6B. The article talks about how General Electric Co. sold its plastic division to a company in Saudi Arabia for 11.6 billion dollars. With the money GE makes from this deal, GE plans on inceasing its stock buy back. They plan on buying back $7 to $8 billion worth of stock. GE's CEO said that this would be a good decision in the long run of the company. This announcement actually caused the stock of GE stocks to go up 27 cents to $37.23. The article then basically talks about some historical facts about the company. It talks about how the plastics division was started 1930s. The platics created from this division is used in automobiles, health care and consumer electronics. Unfortunately the division has been struggling since 2004 due to an increase in costs of natural gas.

After reading this article, the first thought that came to mind is outsourcing. Outsourcing has been a big issue in the past few years. Now that a foreign country owns this department, I wonder if they are going to keep all aspects of this business in America. It would be very unfortunate to have more people lose their jobs due to forgein invesments. Since the plastics department employees about 10,000 people, it would be bad for the economy for these people to lose their jobs. I am also interested in seeing what the company plans to do with this division. GE predicted that the division was worth only about 6 billion. So there must be a good reason why the company paid so much for it

April Third Post

hey, I found article while reading the news online. I thought it would be a good topic to write the blog revision about.
The link to this article is:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070421/ap_on_bi_ge/earns_mcdonald_s;_ylt=Aq.pEgzEFS4eo0SCM7K5quHMWM0F

The article is called "McDonald's 1Q profit climbs 22 percent." The article basically talks about how profits for McDonalds has been going up. With such as increase in profit, McDonalds is hoping to sell almost 1600 restaurants to franchise in Latin America. The announcement in the increase in profit raised stock prices also. With such sucess, analysts don't expect this momentum so slow down anytime soon. The profits for the first three months was $762 million dollars. McDonalds next big thing is the expansion in to Latin America. It plans to find entrepreneurs to provide the capital, land and pay royalties to McDoanlds. Current locations on Latin America have not been growing all that greatly, but still have been able to raise $55 Million in operating income. McDonalds has been recording higher sales for the pase 48 months. One of the key factors has been the sale of chicken, with products such as chicken McNuggets, chicken selects and chicken sandwiches.

With all the scare about nation obesity and how fast food restaurants have played such a big factor, I am surprised to see that McDonalds is capable of increasing their profits so drastically. I have noticed that they are being more socially aware of the obesity problem. They are trying to provide a healthier menu. I feel that compare to other fast food restaurants, McDonalds in the one that is really trying to change their meny to provide healthier food for its customers. I am glad to see that they are doing so well now.

April Second Post

hey, I have previously written a blog about what people to can do to lower there taxes. I decided to write another blog, this time about how the government spends the money we are taxed on. I link to this article is: http://finance.yahoo.com/taxes/article/102817/How-Your-Tax-Dollars-Are-Spent.

The title of the article is How Your Tax Dollars Are Spent. The article starts of by talking about how people should wonder where there hard earned money goes. About 2.7 trillion dollars was collected this year, but about 70 percent has been set asside for previous commitments. This prior commitments include things such as social security, national debt and military expenditures. About 21 percent is used to pay for social security. Then there is 15% that goes to medicare health benefits. 16% is accounted for paying the needy such as welfare and food stamps. About 60% of the total budget goes to paying individuals. Although our national debt is about $9 trillion dollars now, only about 10% goes to paying our debts. Out of the 70 percent, about 30 percent goes to military spending. This means paying for things such as tanks, planes and missles.

I know it sucks to pay for taxes. I remember when I was working, I hated seeing money taken out of my paychecks. Reading this article made me slightly more informed. Atleast now I am more aware of how and how much the government spends the money it takes from us. I realize that government does have a lot of expenditures, and there is no other way it can really raise that much money. So after reading the article I realized that paying for taxes isn't really all that bad. In the end mainly coming back to us or used to better our lives.

April First Post

hey, the article I choose is called "Occidental CEO got more than $400 million in 2006". I got it from yahoo news. The link for the article is http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/070407/occidentalpetroleum_pay.html?.v=8.

The article is about Occidental Petrooleum Corp's CEO took in more than 400 millon dollars as income in 2006. The CEO's name is Ray Irani. This pay out is one of the biggest ever in U.S. history. About 270 millon dollars was from stock options, which was about 7 million stocks. Irani also got 93 million in stock and dividends from a deffered stock. His actual salary for last eyar was on 1.3 million dollars. He also recieved 1.4 million dollars as a bonus. Although he recieved a lot of money, it definetly desearved it. From when he became CEO to now, the stock price rose to 40 dollars from 9 dollars. Richard Kline, an Occidental spokesman said that it was welll worth paying that much.

I think paying anyone this much money is just ridiculous. With all the problems going on in the world, why would anyone need that much money. Making 400 dollars a year is just too much. He recieved so much money, that he won't even know what to do with it. This money could have been spent in much better ways. They could have donated to some worthy cause. I still respect the guy for being able to achieve the sucess he has in the company. He definetly has done some great things for bring up the stock price as much as he has.

March Second Post

hey, I hope you guys are all ready for school start again. I know I'm not. Anyways since the deadline for taxes is coming up, I found a article that I thought would be very appropriate. I found this article on yahoo news. The link to the article is http://news.yahoo.com/s/fool/20070329/bs_fool_fool/117517863705;_ylt=AiWXMZQaGzFVm4WLC2n.AMbq188F.

The title of the article I choose is "Stop paying High Taxes!". The article starts by talking about how families are always trying to find ways to cut their expenses. What most families look past is their taxes. Rather than simply looking at just entertainment or restaurant expenses, families should be paying attention to their taxes also. Just because taxes are paid once a year, it does not mean that people should not pay attention to it. Rather than making a year chore, people can do many things to save money on their taxes. One this to do is keep an eye of for deducitons through out the year. Keep a friendly reminder that you have to pay taxes and try to find ways in which you recieve tax deductions. Keeping records of all the deductions will keep you safe. By having good records, you don't have to worry about paying extra fines for things you did not forgot to file for. Also filling out the right forms can help you from losing money from your pay checks. If you fill out the right tax forms for work, the government might be taking out less money from your pay check. This means more money for you at the present time, rather than waiting for a big check to come once a year. The last bit of advice is to take in to consideration that you have to pay taxes when you are making any big decisions. These decisions can include any investments or even purchasing a house or a car.

I think this article proves a very good point about being aware of your taxes. I know when I use to work, taxes use to really bother me. I hated having money taken out of my pay check. I knew that I would get it back eventually, but I rather would have spent it when i got paid. This article is not very relevant to me as of now, because I dont currently work. Yet I think it is very useful for those who work. I think that this aticle would be very help ful for the working class. It would definetly help prevent the government from taking away the money people work so hard for.

March First Post

hey, I hope everyone is enjoying their spring break. I know I am. Anyways, this morning I was looking at Yahoo news and found a very interesting article about Walmart. The link to the article is http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070328/wal_mart_new_york.html?.v=3

The title of the article is Wal-Mart May Never Enter Manhattan. The article talks about how Walmart is questioning opening up stores in New York. Walmart executives were specifically talking about Manhattan. They feel that running a Walmart in that city is just too expensive and is not economically beneficial. Although current conditions don't favor walmart to enter that market, they said that if circumstances changes they would like to open a store there. They feel that it would be very beneficial for communities that live in that area. Walmart critics say that the city of New York would never accpet the way Walmart is run. They say that their low prices drag along very other high costs. Some other critics said that if Walmart comes to New York, then there would be no place that would be off limits to them. The article talks about how a Walmart was opened in Chicago and has been much more sucessful than they expected.

I think this article discusses a issue that has been very controversial in the past few years. Walmart has grown to have many critics and there are clear signs of it. The fact that there are many people against walmart coming into New York shows that there might not be such a need of big retail stores. Clearly not all markets favor Walmart, such as New York, so there signs of Walmart diminishing demand is quite present. All though there are many that shop at Walmart, there are also many that oppose it.

Fourth Post

hey, this afternoon I was browsing the internet and found this article the very much relates to business. The link to the article is:
http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/17765/meetings-make-you-stupid

The title of the article is Meetings Make You Stupid. The basic summary of the article is that about a study scientists had that proves that meetins reduced productivity. They asked a group to come up with as many brands of soft drinks as they possibly could. The group came up with a smaller number than when they worked on it by them selves. This does go against what has been said through out history about how groups come up with better ideas. This big problem with groups is that certain ideas are not taken in to consideration.

I think this article does make a good point. I know personally that when I work in groups, I end up taking a back seat. So any good ideas I have are usually not said. Plus when I am in a group, I feel that I am more pressured to put my 2 cents in. I usally go blank when I am under pressure. I do agree that meetings are still necessary because we have to inform people, but certain things should be left for people to work on themselves rather than in a group.

Third Post

hey, this morning I read a article that caught my eye. It was posted on yahoo news and the link is:
http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/samiljan/4515/be-afraid-powder-sized-rfid-chips

The article is called Be Afraid: Powdr-Sized RFID Chips
The article is is talking about RFID chips. This chips are are microchips that are in your credit cards, U.S. passports and all you to pay at tolls using a radio waves. It talks about how the company Hitachi is planning on making new chips that are so small that they can be placed in paper, money or gift certificates. These chips can be used to track where and what you purchase. Which bring makes this a very controversial subject. Chips in credit cards are slightly different from the ones used at pay tolls. The ones in your credit card have to be tapped to work, while the ones in your pay toll cards can be as far as 10 feet. It really isn't clear as too what degree we as consumers should watch out for others looking at our purchases.

I think the RFID chips are a useful item if used properly. It does make life for many much more convenient. For those who use the toll on a daily basis, can just use there EZ pass and save time. Those who use their credit cards can use their credit cards that much faster. The only issue is when companies start to watch what we purchase. Although their intentions might be good, it raises a privacy issue. Companies mainly monitor what we purchase so that are aware of the type of goods and services we recieve satisfaction from. This allows them to produce the types of product that there is an actual demand for. The only problem with this is that they might be going to much into our lives to figure this out. Some people might feel that no one sould know what they purchase with out their approval.

Second Post (News Article)

hey, I recently read a business article on yahoo news. The link to the article is:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070205/ap_on_bi_ge/economy;_ylt=AhammHXNM8M9c.IxSUSGzKmyBhIF;_ylu=X3oDMTA2Z2szazkxBHNlYwN0bQ--
The basic summary of the article is how the service sector in the US market is growing. Although the manufacturing sector is decreasing, the service sector is big enough that its growth is making up for the loss. One of the major reasons why manufacturing the US is decling is because of domestic car manufacturers. They are cutting back, which results in less products produced. The growth rate of the US markets is low, but it is still increasing.

It is some what obvious that the service department is increasing. There is a greated demand for services such as massagers. Although there is a increase in the service sector, I really don't think that the manufacturing sector will decrease too much in the US. I think that if the manufacturing does decrease, it is mainly due to outsourcing the production to foreign countries.
